Rosamund Illing (Soprano)

Rosamund Illing is one of Australia’s most distinguished sopranos. Her career spans the breadth of the repertoire for lyric soprano in opera, symphony and song. She has performed to critical acclaim in England, France, Germany, Japan, the United States, Canada and Australia and her recordings have been lavished with major awards.

After graduating with honours from the University of Adelaide, Rosamund Illing continued her studies in England and Italy. She soon embarked on an impressive series of opera engagements in Great Britain with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (as Musetta in La bohème with Placido Domingo as Rodolfo), English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Touring Opera and at the Wexford Festival. In Australia, Rosamund Illing has performed with each of the state opera companies and Opera Australia.

Ms Illing’s operatic repertoire embraces almost the entire spectrum of great soprano roles from baroque to verismo:  Alcina, Abigaille, Donna Anna, Elettra, Vitellia, Gilda, Norina, Marguerite, Amelia, Cio Cio San, Liù, Mimì, Nedda and many more.

Equally at home on the concert platform, Ms Illing has performed with Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Charles Mackerass, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir George Solti, Gustav Kuhn and Richard Bonynge in association with many of the great orchestras. She has appeared in recital at the Aldeburgh Festival, the Melbourne and Perth International Arts Festivals and at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan. Ms Illing’s concert repertoire ranges from Handel’s Messiah and Vivaldi’s Gloria through to Mahler’s Symphonies (2, 4, 8), Strauss’ Four Last Songs and the Verdi Requiem.

Rosamund Illing has an impressive discography. Her solo disc, Amoureuse  (a selection of arias from operas of Jules Massenet, conducted by Richard Bonynge) was released by Melba Recordings. In 2008, Melba Recordings released Saint-Saëns’ Hélène with Ms Illing in the title role.

In 2009 and 2010 Rosamund Illing sang Ravel’s Scheherazade with Orchestra Victoria, the role of Una Poenitentiam in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 for the Adelaide Festival and appeared in recital with Ian Holtham for Musica Viva
