Benjamin Martin (Piano)

Benjamin Martin was born in Melbourne in 1970 and began learning the piano, cello and composition before the age of 10. He entered the Victorian College of the Arts at 15, where he was a pupil of Alexander Semetsky and Stephen McIntyre. At the Juilliard School in New York he worked with the great American pianist, John Browning.

On completion of his studies Benjamin worked with Dorothy Taubman, studying and teaching briefly at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Since returning to Australia in 1994, he has given many concerts at home and abroad. He frequently performs chamber music and has collaborated with the great German violist, Hartmut Lindemann. In 1988 he directed and conducted the Queens College Choir.

He has received numerous awards, including two full scholarships to the Tanglewood Summer Festival as both pianist and composer, the Queen Elizabeth Grant, first prize in the Hepzibah Menuhin Memorial Award and the Marten Bequest Scholarship.

Benjamin has performed with the Australian Chamber and Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, the Australia Ensemble and the Australian String Quartet.

In 2002 Martin performed a six-week tour of the United States, performing concerti by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky with recitals in the Frick Gallery, New Hampshire, and New York. Among the artists and coductors he has performed with are Eiji Oue, Pekka Kussisto, Richard Tognetti, Elizabeth Wallfisch and Markus Stenz.

Benjamin has championed a great deal of 20th Century music and given first performances of music by Morton Gould and Brett Dean. As a composer, his music has been performed in Australia, Europe and the United States.
