Stephen Emmerson (Piano)

Stephen Emmerson studied piano with Pamela Page at University of Queensland. Among other prizes and awards, he won the Commonwealth final of what was then the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Instrumental and Vocal Competition in 1980. During the 1980s he studied piano with Peter Wallfisch in England and has Masters and Doctoral degrees from Oxford University. He has been on staff at the Queensland Conservatorium since 1987 where he has taught a range of courses in music analysis, music history and literature, research methods as well as piano, chamber music and performance practice. In recent years he has regularly been involved with the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne where he convenes their Master of Music program in conjunction with Griffith University.

Stephen Emmerson has performed widely both as soloist and with chamber ensembles around Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the UK.  He has performed at many festivals around the country and abroad including the Melbourne Festival, the Christchurch Arts Festival, the Bangalow Music Festival, the Four Winds Festival, Tyalgum Music Festival, Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival, Encounters, DeClassified Music, The Australian Piano Duo Festival, The Performer’s Voice Symposium (in Singapore) and the CMPCP's Performance Studies Network international Conference (in Cambridge in 2014). Most notably he has performed frequently with ensembles such as the Griffith Trio (an Ensemble in Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium for over a decade), Dean-Emmerson-Dean and the Lunaire Collective and has played duo-piano recitals with pianists including Roy Howat, Bernard Lanskey, Sonya Lifschitz, Stewart Kelly  and Angela Turner. His performances and recordings are heard regularly in radio broadcasts. Stephen currently has three recordings in the Melba Recordings catalogue, including his new release of Mahler’s Second Symphony arranged for four pianists on two pianos.
