Two classic clarinet works from the master feature in these all Australian performances, both of which reach the highest musical standards, and are well worth consideration. The Clarinet Quintet is a glowing account of one of Australia’s favourite chamber music pieces. Dean has a ravishing tone and simplicity which is his strength, backed by some beautiful playing from the Grainger Quartet . In the concerto his wonderfully sensitive playing is accompanied by some great playing from the Queensland Orchestra under the visiting conductor Tourniaire who brings out some ravishing sounds from the strings in particular. Most recordings couple the chamber music with other chamber items and it is inspired to have the two favourite clarinet works coupled, particularly with such fine musicianship that makes satisfying listening.
