Ben Jacks, who shares the Principal Horn position in the Sydney Symphony, is quite a hornist (hybrid SACD MR301117). He appears as soloist on a beautifully recorded disc offering two pieces by Jean-Michel Damase
(Concerto, Rhapsody), Koechlin’s lovely, three-movement Poème for horn and orchestra, Dukas’s Villanelle, unobtrusively orchestrated by Terracini, Saint-Saëns’s Morceau de Concert for horn and orchestra and a surprisingly viable 1905 work by the then conductor of the Melbourne Symphony, W. L. Marshall-Hall...The Koechlin, a mini-concerto, is delightful music. Barry Tuckwell (no slouch as a hornist himself) leads the Orchestra Victoria and The Queensland Orchestra .
