Although this is chronologically the first music drama of Wagner's Ring Cycle, it is the second to be released in this ambitious venture for recording the complete 2004 Adelaide Cycle, having been preceded by Die Walküre three months ago. That set a very high standard, both in performance and in the task of recording it live, and this Rheingold lives up to that standard in every way. The vocal performances are excellent, supported by warm and vibrant playing from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Asher Fisch. From the prelude depicting the depths of the Rhine, to the final triumphant entry of the Gods, the listener is caught up in the drama. Simply superb.
