Two new recordings from the Melbourne based Melba label which is dedicated to showing Australian talent can unashamedly take its place on the international music stage ...

The music of Louis Vierne is not well known in this country and rarely gets an airing. But here are four songs, coupled with three from Chausson that showcase French Romantic music at its very best. The Vierne songs are hauntingly beautiful though the theme of death and despair in poems by Victor Hugo, Henri Murger and the Countess de Noailles pervades. This is in contrast to the optimism and joy of the poems by Maurice Boucher set by Ernest Chausson.

Tenor Steve Davislim is probably the finest Australian voice on the international stage at present, and Melba has been championing his talent in recent recordings. The Queensland Orchestra is excellent under the French conductor Tourniaire. The sound on both recordings is excellent and as always the texts that accompany the discs are top rate (and easily readable).
