A respectable performance with one brilliant surprise

Wagner’s Ring Cycle is a challenge to any opera company and many American opera companies outside the Metropolitan are only now beginning to tackle the expensive and challenging project.

This recording of the fourth opera in the Cycle, Götterdämmerung , is part of the entire project from the Australian forces in Adelaide. Asher Fisch conducts the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra with a fine, secure, thrilling combination of music and drama that the work requires...

The surprise for this listener is the Brünnhilde of Lisa Gasteen. Though the name may not be familiar with many US opera lovers, Lisa Gasteen is rapidly becoming a prized Wagnerian singer throughout Europe (even the Metropolitan Opera)... Hers is a beautiful voice from the lowest register to the highest notes without audible breaks in the sound production... an artist to watch and before her fame reaches a zenith, this recording is a fine introduction to a significant Wagnerian soprano.

The boxed CD set is worth the investment for Gasteen alone!
