In the trademark pink of this label, Elizabeth Whitehouse’s debut solo CD is a thing of great beauty.

As could be expected with Richard Bonynge in charge, the program features many arias that are unexpected and several that are unheard of. Rare Gounod, Cilea and Girodano rub shoulders with recherché Gomes, Saint-Saëns and Mascagni.

Whitehouse’s patrician voice soars in this perfectly chosen journey and the only note of doubt is why we have had to wait until now to hear her on disc.

Wonderful.
